In 2024, the Edwin S.H. Leong Centre for Healthy Aging, in partnership with the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health, hosted the Healthy Aging Visual Art Prize. The competition was chaired by Dr. Julia Henderson, Co-Chair of Community Engagement and Intersection at the Edwin S.H. Leong Centre for Healthy Aging, and invited a wide range of artistic submissions exploring visual representations of healthy human aging.
The contest was grounded in the World Health Organization’s definition of healthy aging as the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age. Functional ability refers to having the capabilities that allow people to be and do what they value. Central to this definition is the recognition that there is no single or “typical” way to age well, and that healthy aging does not require the absence of disease or health conditions.
An Artists’ Night was held on January 10, 2025, to celebrate the finalists and their work. All submissions are featured in the Digital Art Gallery below. We hope this gallery serves as a lasting collection of positive, diverse, and authentic images of human aging.
