Catalyst Grant

The Edwin S.H. Leong Centre for Healthy Aging (ELCHA) invites its Investigators to submit new project proposals to be considered for a Catalyst Grant Competition. The purpose of the competition is to provide active ELCHA Investigators with the opportunity to conduct collaborative projects that contribute to the Centre’s research ambitions and four research themes: Gerosciences, Society-to-Cell, Prevention & Intervention, and Age-Associated Diseases. We invite applications for funding up to $50,000 over two years. A maximum of three grants will be awarded.

An ELCHA Catalyst Grant should:

  • Fit the overarching goal of the ELCHA and propose a project that clearly relates to aging and/or the health and well-being of older adults;
  • Catalyze a new research project that in turn lays the groundwork for future research activity (e.g., generation of preliminary data to support applications to external funding opportunities);
  • Build new, interdisciplinary collaborations among ELCHA Investigators;
  • Provide funding for a project that does not already have funding, as the intent of this competition is to catalyze new research;
  • Support research activity – projects are to support direct research costs only; that is costs directly attributable to an individual research project (e.g. supplies, trainee or staff salaries, services), and not indirect costs. To understand the distinction between the direct costs of research and the indirect costs, please see the UBC Office of Research Services website;
  • Funds must be spent in Canada

There are two stages to this competition. The first stage is to submit a notice of intent (NOI) by October 1, 2025. The purpose of the NOI is to confirm eligibility of the project and team and help identify reviewers. All NOI applications that meet eligibility will proceed to the full application stage. The instructions for the full application can be found in the document below. Full applications are due on December 19, 2025.
