“Geli” by Richard Motchman

Title: Geli

Artist: Richard Motchman

Medium: Painting (oil on shaped wood panel)

How does this artwork represent healthy human aging? (Artwork Description)

The focus of the painting “Geli” is the body of an older woman, a truthful portrayal of her. The painting is named after the model because, although her head is not depicted, this is the body of a distinct individual with the myriad details that make an individual. Geli is naked in this painting to portray the beauty of the human form at all ages and to show that erotic intimacy is a part of healthy aging. Geli bears the scar of an earlier bout with breast cancer but proudly modelling her body, plus the vibrant life she lives involved in community theatre productions and travel, demonstrate a healthy, vibrant life happens beyond the troubles of youth. The colours of the painting seeks to represent that vibrancy. This painting is done on a panel cut to create a shaped panel corresponding closely to the human form. The shaped panel is utilized to focus attention onto the person depicted but also to emphasize the object nature of the form portrayed plus the object nature of the painting itself. The support for this painting was created from many small pieces of wood, that roughly followed the curves of the human shape before being cut to its final form, in this mimics the wood edge pieces and painting surface of a traditional panel.
