GerOmics NSERC CREATE Training Program

About

The GerOmics CREATE program is Canada’s first training initiative that intersects genomics and aging biology, led by experts at University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Victoria (UVic). Genomics is the study of all genes and how they function, and from the emergence of genomics, modern science has expanded into related powerful “omics” fields. These include transcriptomics (how genes are turned on or off), epigenomics (chemical switches on genes), proteomics (the study of proteins), metabolomics (small molecules that fuel cells), and microbiome research (microbes living in and on organisms). Together, research in these fields reveal how and why we age.

Leveraging world-class expertise from UBC and UVic and supported by unique institutional assets such as UBC’s newly established Edwin S.H. Leong Centre for Healthy Aging (ELCHA), GerOmics will provide a multidisciplinary, immersive training environment. HQP will master state-of-the-art ‘omics technologies to explore how genomics-driven innovations in aging biology can be broadly applied to the healthcare, biotechnology, conservation, and agriculture sectors.
