Judy Wong, PhD
Judy Wong is a Professor and the Chair of the Molecular and Systems Pharmacology Group in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC), with cross-appointments in UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical Genetics, and the BC Cancer’s Department of Experimental Therapeutics.
Classically trained in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, she earned her Ph.D. from the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Toronto and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. At Berkeley, she studied the cell biology of telomeres and telomerase, as well as the disease mechanisms underlying the premature-aging syndrome dyskeratosis congenita, under the mentorship of Kathleen Collins.
Judy is an expert in genome biology, with a focus on telomeres and atypical nucleic acid structures such as G-quadruplexes, and on understanding their roles in aging and premature aging disorders. Her research defines how genome dysfunction and epigenetic biomarkers drive cellular aging and tissue decline, enabling the early detection of accelerated aging and informing strategies to improve long-term health outcomes.
