Healthy Aging Research Seminar: Dr. Joke Duyck

Title: On the Search for Better Oral Health(care) for Older Persons

Summary: Unfortunately, oral health generally declines in older persons and is often very poor in those who become care-dependent. This has a significant impact not only on oral function and quality of life, but also on general health. Prof. J. Duyck’s research focuses on the development, implementation and evaluation of methods to monitor and improve oral health in the ageing population. In her presentation, she will discuss the use of the interRAI suite of instruments, a screening tool for holistic care planning, as a lever for integrating oral health care into the overall care plan. She will also explain how a methodology for preventive oral health care has been developed for use in long-term care facilities. Findings from these research lines will be presented and their relevance discussed.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Joke Duyck is a full professor in the Department of Oral Health Sciences at KU Leuven. She holds a degree in dentistry (1995), specialist in Prosthetic Dentistry (2000) and a PhD in medical sciences (2000) from KU Leuven in collaboration with the University of Oslo. She is responsible for teaching gerodontology and removable prosthetic dentistry within KU Leuven. Her research focuses on gerodontology and prosthetic dentistry, and in particular on the integration of oral health care in care planning and preventive oral health policies for frail older persons. She is a member of the board of directors of the Flemish Institute of Oral Health and responsible for the preventive oral health care for frail older persons in Flanders.
