How does this artwork represent healthy human aging? (Artwork Description)
Entangled: A collage frieze (42″ x 10″) of a moment in the Aging Boldly Project (photography by Vince Hemingson). The project was conceived by artist Annette Nieukerk where a group of aging female artists challenged the taboo of depicting aging bodies. Her vision statement describes a naked photoshoot with the intention of “exposing our identities as physical and sexual beings “ to “explore what effect this unflinching gaze will have on our individual artistic practices.” The entire process was imbued with qualities that enhance healthy aging. The photoshoot embodies being open to new experiences, meeting new people, setting an intention, planning, cooperating, going out of one’s comfort zone, conquering anxiety, excitement, new experiences, time in nature, feeling supported and cared for, energetic, laughing, playful camaraderie, exhilaration, the production of art, honoring commitment, exploration through art, regular connection and encouragement, evolving friendships, trying out new art forms and revisiting old ones, buoyed by others’ accomplishments, supported through life’s trials, and ultimately feeling SEEN.
