Healthy Aging Research Seminar: Dr. Philipe de Souto Barreto

Lecture Title: The Inspire research platform: Global View and Specific Example of Physical Activity

Summary: Aging is the most important risk factor for the onset of several chronic diseases and functional decline. Understanding the interplays between biological aging and the biology of diseases and functional loss as well as integrating a function-centered approach to the care pathway of older adults are crucial steps towards the elaboration of preventive strategies (both pharmacological and non-pharmacological) against the onset and severity of burdensome chronic conditions during aging. In order to tackle these two crucial challenges, ie, how both the manipulation of biological aging and the implementation of a function-centered care pathway (the Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) model of the World Health Organization) may contribute to the trajectories of healthy aging, a new initiative on Gerosciences was built at Toulouse University Hospital Gerontopole: the INSPIRE research program. Dr. Barreto will introduce the goals and framework of INSPIRE, using his own research on physical activity as an example.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Philipe de Souto Barreto is Professor of Gerontology (Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse 3) and is the Director of the Institute on Aging at the Gerontopole, Toulouse University Hospital (WHO Collaborating Center for Frailty, Clinical & Geroscience Research & Geriatric Training). PhD in Bio-cultural Anthropology, he has leaded and participated in international taskforces, particularly on topics related to exercise, frailty, and geroscience. Philipe contributed to several national and international research projects as PI, local PI, and co-investigator (including the INSPIRE platform on Geroscience). Dr Barreto has been invited speaker at national and international congresses and has published hundreds of papers in prestigious Journals. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging (IF 5.8).

Participants may attend the seminar in-person at the Rudy North Lecture Theatre in the Centre for Brain Health at UBC, or virtually via Zoom. Zoom details for virtual attendance can be found below. A light breakfast will be provided for all those attending in-person.
