How does this artwork represent healthy human aging? (Artwork Description)

This 9″ x 12″ painting, “Shelter,” captures a deeply personal experience from the pandemic lockdown era. Created during this period of uncertainty, it resonates with the theme of healthy aging, highlighting the importance of social connection and access to nature. As an international PhD student in the US and living alone, I faced the fear of indefinite isolation from family and friends when the lockdown was announced. Fortunately, my then-boyfriend (now-husband)’s family offered me a safe haven. The front room of their home, depicted in this painting, became my sanctuary, where the presence of plants and sunlight provided solace amidst the isolation. This small but significant connection to nature, coupled with the warmth and support of my loved ones, provided a crucial sense of peace and stability during this trying time. As a trainee at the Centre for Healthy Aging and a psychologist, I have seen how social isolation and connectedness could affect healthy aging and mental well-being. The pandemic intensified these issues for many elderly individuals. This painting is dedicated to my husband’s family for their kindness and acknowledges the broader importance of social support and nature in fostering resilience and healthy aging.
