Melanie Murray, MD, PhD

Dr. Melanie Murray is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. She is also an Infectious disease specialist who provides HIV care at BC Women’s Oak Tree Clinic, and a Staff Physician at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver. She earned a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, as well as a medical degree and a PhD at the University of Manitoba in medical microbiology. She completed an infectious disease fellowship and an internal medicine residency at the University of British Columbia.

Her research interests include, hormonal dysregulation, sexual and reproductive health, and comorbidities of aging, particularly in women living with HIV. She currently co-leads the British Columbia CARMA-CHIWOS Collaboration (BCC3) with Drs. Helene Cote (UBC), Angela Kaida (SFU) and Valerie Nicholson (the principal knowledge user). BCC3 is a cell to society study by, with, and for women living with HIV that is investigating healthy aging in women living with HIV.

More information can be found on the website (https://hivhearme.ca/studies/), and in the published protocol https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/11/8/e046558.

Specifically, Dr. Murray studies the intersection between comorbidities, hormone dysregulation, phsycho-socio-structural factors and aging at the cellular level. Community engagement and knowledge transfer is integral to her work; she employs several Community Research Associates (women living with HIV who have research training and are involved in all aspects of the study) to conduct surveys and participate in/co-lead knowledge translation events.
